Kitchen Kingdom

The last royal cookie has disappeared just before the welcome feast. Queen Spatula demands answers, Sir Whisk offers an enormous accusation, and Lady Ladle insists on checking the facts. Jester Teaspoon hides a mistake behind jokes. As the court learns to listen, a confession leads to a fair repair and a feast where everyone belongs.

Introduces the court and connects the scenes; these lines can be shared.

    Reading load: Light

Casting options

  • With 5 performers, assign one person to each role.
  • With 4 performers, assign the four court characters; Sir Whisk also reads every Narrator line in a neutral voice.
  • With 3 performers: A plays Queen Spatula; B plays Sir Whisk and reads every Narrator line; C plays Lady Ladle and Jester Teaspoon. The script alternates these two characters through an imaginary pantry; C changes posture and voice without leaving the performance space. No costume changes are required.
  • A parent may read the Narrator in any arrangement. Keep all four court characters' lines; the Jester's confession is essential to the story.

What you need

Required

  • A wooden spoon or rolled-paper scepter
  • A stable chair for the throne
  • An empty unbreakable container for the cookie jar (the script's cookie plate)
  • A paper cookie half in a paper envelope or folded paper
  • A folded paper note reading: Half for later. T.

Optional extras

  • Paper crown
  • Tea towels as capes
  • An empty unbreakable bowl
  • Four paper place cards, three paper signs, and paper decorations

Getting ready

Preparation time
About 15 min*
Performance time
About 25 min*
  1. Clear a comfortably lit performance space; place the stable throne chair beside a low table or a marked pretend table on the floor.
  2. Keep the cookie jar empty. Jester hides the remaining paper cookie half in the envelope; the half already eaten is only described. Use no real food.
  3. Place the folded note beside the jar. All stirring, cooking, tasting, and eating are imaginary: no heat, knives, glass, or real ingredients. Never put paper in a mouth.
  4. The remaining half stays intact; indicate two portions by pointing. Signs and place cards may be mimed. Handle the scepter gently; do not strike furniture or other performers.
  5. Assign roles and practise the voice switches if doubling. Read through all scenes once, including movements and pauses.

*Preparation is approximate. Performance estimate of about 25–30 minutes is based on a timed read-through including actions and pauses; staging may vary.
